AMD Announces Launch of New Ryzen 3000 XT Series

AMD made a big announcement this week as they intend to launch the new Ryzen 3000 XT CPUs. This announcement will become a stopgap between the current generation and the next generation. Ryzen 4000 CPU series that’s expected to launch later this year.

With this latest update, AMD seems to compete more sustainably with its old rival, Intel. Back in April, AMD launched StoreMi which was covered by TechRadar Pro. But now, the company has announced version 2.0 of the series that will include a new caching-based acceleration algorithm to enhance the data integrity and prioritize most-used data during working. This would speed up the boot times by up to 31%, thus decreasing game load times by up to 13% compared to an HDD only.

The company carried out tests using a hard drive of unknown capacity using a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD of unknown origin. This means that you can mix and match any type of storage, regardless of whether it’s magnetic or non-magnetic.

However, some of the fans might get disappointed because the Radeon RAMDisk might be missing in this version of StoreMI. Otherwise, it would have achieved the Holy Grail of allowing RAM and storage to mix, just like what Intel had done with Optane.

Learning from games consoles may help

It’s expected that this new series will arrive soon because AMD has already been working very closely with Microsoft on the brand-new Xbox Series X gaming console. This would be one of the biggest leaps in performance for the company as it moves to a new storage system that combines DirectStorage software with customized hardware. 

According to the latest updates, Microsoft plans to bring DirectStorage to Windows as well. This can reduce the processor overhead from I/O operations of multiple cores to just a fraction of a single core. AMD is likely to benefit from this arrangement due to the modular nature of its CPU architecture. Moreover, it will not be tied to any custom hardware.

With this upcoming mix-and-match architecture, one can imagine that an AMD system is capable of pooling all the available memory/storage resources together. This could be managed intelligently in a way that’s far more efficient compared to what Windows 10 achieves with Virtual Memory which is the part of the storage component that the operating system uses as RAM. At the moment, this is pure speculation for the gamers. But, of course, AMD has dedicated its resources for StoreMi making us optimistic about the future series.
