A Volcanic Eruption Blew Away the Ozone Layer in the End-Permian Extinction

Ozone depletion has become the greatest concern of today’s scientist and everyone. Why? Because it has led to global warming. But did you know that you are not the only ones who ever contributed to the depletion of this savior layer? Yes, let me tell you about that.

The Great Dyeing:

It has been found out that the ozone layer has depleted in the past, but it happened in the early days of the earth when dinosaurs were appearing on the earth. Before their advent, an event normally called as great dying occurred. This event occurred some 250 million years ago. It completely wiped off the ozone layer affecting the life on a planet completely.

The greatest wave of extinction:

Do you all consider the greatest extinction event as the dinosaur extinction wave? If you do let me tell you that you might be wrong somewhere. The formerly mentioned event of great dying is comparatively a greater wipeout of life from the planet. This is known as the Permian-Triassic extinction.

Previously it was a volcanic eruption which led to the massive destruction. This volcanic eruption was no ordinary one. It is known as the Siberian Flood Basalts. This was a volcanic eruption which stretched over a period of a million years. this volcanic eruption led to the destruction of 97% of life in the marine bodies. Approximately 70% of life on the land had also been wiped off.

The research:

This massive destruction when scaled appalled the scientists and they could not keep back from investigating why these Siberian Flood Basalts were more destructive than any other destruction of similar or more magnitude which took place in the past or afterward.

The research has found out that the massive number of halogens which were sent off to the atmosphere in the result of this the ozone layer narrowed down to almost nothing which is why there was a large-scale extinction on the surface of the earth.


Bromine, chlorine, and iodine were sent essentially to the atmosphere which created highly reactive radicals which then reacted with the ozone layer particles and kept on destroying it. This continued for a period of the 1 million year which is a big time to destroy a place. this destruction will take millions of years to finally regain its original shape unless no other such eruption reverses the process once again.
